Will your next vacation take place among the stars or in the depths of the sea? SUTUS (Space & Underwater Universal Summit) is the first event that brings together the best of outer space tourism and subaquatic tourism worldwide. The inaugural edition will be held on September 23 and 24 at Les Roches Marbella International School of Hotel Management, an international hotel and tourism university in Spain.

The slogan of SUTUS 2019 is “Beyond borders” and aims to bring together national and international experts in aeronautics, space tourism, luxury tourism and underwater research in Marbella.

This event marks the 50th anniversary of Man landing on the Moon, while it also coincides with the Autumn Equinox and with Seville being named the European capital of Space. The city of Seville receives that honor as this year’s President of the Community of Arianne Cities and will host the next Ministerial Council of the European Space Agency (ESA) this November.

NASA Lands on SUTUS 2019

Sam Scimemi, International Space Station (ISS) Director at NASA Headquarters, will participate as guest speaker at SUTUS. Among his functions, he’s responsible for ensuring the Station’s safety and productivity of operations and on-board use, as well as the application of policies and program direction. In addition, his experience includes manned space flights, Earth and space science, as well as programs such as the Space Shuttle, Hubble Telescope, Space Station, Stratospheric Observatory of Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) and many others.

Among the subjects that NASA will discuss during SUTUS are what is a Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) Economy; what marketing plans does NASA have for the International Space Station; when will the ISS begin to receive tourists; what activities will be available for space tourists; and many more.

Other Presenters

Scimemi will be joined by speakers such as Tony Gannon, Vice President of Research and Innovation at the Space Florida aerospace development initiative, and Arthur Paolella, Senior Scientifist at the Harris Corporation.

Completing the spece-themed SUTUS 2019 group of speakers will be Nancy Vermeulen, Space Training Academy founder. Future space tourists from Spain will also participate and share their experience. Among them are Ana Bru, the first space tourist selected by Virgin Galactic and owner of luxury travel agency BRU&BRU; civilian astronaut Eduardo Lurueña; José Mariano López-Urdiales, founder of Zero2Infinity; and Ángel Jané, handpicked by the Mars One program to establish a colony on Mars.

The Subaquatic Tourism block will be represented by experts such as Javier Noriega, president of the Marine Maritime Cluster of Andalusia; Scott Waters, Project Manager of the Pisces VI Submarine; Michele Stefanile, underwater archaeologist; José Antonio Moya, scientific journalist; and underwater cartoonist Luis Carlos Zambrano.

Apollo 11 Virtual Experience

In addition to the conferences, attendees and students visiting Les Roches Marbella during the event can also enjoy a first-person experience of climbing onto Apollo 11, taking off and feeling the ship land, using Oculus Rift virtual reality glasses.

In this five-to-10-minute interactive VR experience, participants may even select the flag they wish to plant on the Moon. They will recreate and relive the moment in which Man steps on the Moon. This experience was designed by 2FEEL 3D.

SUTUS 2019 is organized by Les Roches, Medina Media Events and the Andalusian Agency for Foreign Promotion (EXTENDA).
