What is Jubilee 2025?

At its core, the Jubilee or Holy Year is a call by the Catholic Church for its followers to visit Vatican City and participate in certain rituals. This event takes place every 25 years, although on occasion it has been convened extraordinarily.
The Pope marks the official beginning of the Jubilee on Christmas Eve with the opening of the Holy Door in St. Peter’s Basilica (Basilica di San Pietro). This tradition often involves a hammer, but Pope Francis, the current supreme pontiff of the Catholic Church, simply knocked on the door on December 24 due to his poor state of health.
Many Jubilee participants will cross this threshold or another of the Holy Doors around Rome as part of their pilgrimage, in order to be granted certain spiritual indulgences. Think less religious bribery and more proof of devotion, like when Christians give up something they like during Lent.
