Panama’s Copa Airlines expands its list of destinations in the Southern Cone of America. In a press release, Copa announced two new weekly flights to Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. The route will be available to the public from July 6, 2019. This new connection marks the eighty-first world destination for the Central American commercial airline.
“Known by locals as Par’bo, our new destination offers a fascinating ethnic mix, a wide variety of cultures, a pristine nature and a historic center considered a world heritage site,” said the Copa press release. The United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) did in fact add Paramaribo’s historic inner city to its World Heritage List in 2002. This historic center preserves the details that betray the country’s colonial past of the 17th and 18th centuries. It stands out for its Dutch architecture mixed with details contributed by the pre-Columbian cultures that inhabited the territory.
